Winter Hats For All!

Most of the adults in the family got hats as their Christmas present this year. I made nine hats in total, including the rainbow hat I made for my youngest niece.

The second hat I made was another rainbow hat, but this time in adult rather than baby size:

This one is a bright rainbow, a bit more manly than the pastels:

This one is green and browns –  another manly one:

This one is in purples and white. I tried out thicker stripes for this one; they worked well:

And finally for this pattern I made two matching in blue and white stripes – Ipswich Town football colours:

The last two hats I made were novelty hats.

One was a minion:

And the other a red monster:

Everyone’ll be ready for a cold winter 🙂

Charity Baby Items

Last year I took part in the 12 Days of Christmas charity preemie hat challenge. This year I took part again. These are the twelve hats that I made. I chose just the one pattern and made each one in a different colour:

I made a set of nine newborn reversible crib shoes from the pattern by Peek-a-Boo Patterns:

And nine sets of preemie crochet booties:

They have all been sent to help the Australian Outback Baby Project.

Christmas Stars

Habitual Homebody

This month’s crochet-along was stars, and Alycia wrote a great photo tutorial on how to make them.

I thought they’d make a great Christmas decoration, and made a set of 8 stars. They were very quick and easy. I made the whole thing in an evening. I chose red and green to make the stars so they’re nice and Christmassy, and a yellowy gold colour for the string to hold them all together, which is just a string of chain stitches that are slip stitched through the top of each star. When I had finished making my stars they were very curly, so I knew I would need to do something to them to keep them straight. I pinned them wrong side up to the ironing board and painted them with a water/pva glue mixture several times.

This morning they were dry and I unpinned them to find nice straight stars 🙂 The glue dries clear (although you can’t see it anyway as it’s on the back) and they’re nice and solid so they won’t curl again. The also have a bit more weight to them now which I think makes them hang nicely. Pretty Christmassy stars 🙂And since it’s 1st December, they’ll be joined later today by the Christmas tree!

Baby Rainbow Hat

I can cross one present off my Christmas list!

This rainbow hat will be for my youngest niece. The pattern is one I found on Etsy. It’s called Tutti Frutti designed by The Hat And I. I made the 6-12 month size.

It is a striped corkscrew hat – it is topped with a corkscrew of each colour stripe, giving it a pom pom effect. I hope she likes it 🙂

Sew Cute Tuesday

Wedding Hearts Blanket

We’ve been away for almost a month, travelling to the other side of the world to my brother’s wedding. Now we’re back I can share the wedding present I made.

About 18 months ago I trawled Ravelry and bought the pattern.

I took a trip to Spotlight and picked out a whole range of colours in their 8-ply pure wool.

And then (very) slowly I made square after square until I had 63 of them.

And then the joining began, until finally, with 3 days to spare before the wedding, it was finished! I don’t really do random, so the colours run in diagonal stripes! On the square in the bottom right I sewed their names and the wedding date.

One finished blanket 🙂

Neapolitan Baby Blanket

I have finally finished this blanket – yay!

I started it about 3 months ago, and finished the actual blanket quite quickly. Then I put it to one side ready to add the border and it’s been there ever since. Last weekend I spent two evenings on the border and now it’s finished!

It’s neapolitan as it’s pink, brown and white – like the ice cream! The stripes are diagonal, a bit like this blanket I made last year. The edging that I’ve been putting off is a shell shape, alternating between each of the three colours. I was following the Candy Stripe Blanket pattern from Lulu Loves Crochet. It’s just the right size for a baby, measuring approximately 60cm x 90cm. Here it is spread out to see the whole thing 🙂

Newborn Crochet Booties

Recently I offered to test a new pattern for some girly crochet baby booties. I thought they would be a good addition to the parcel I am sending for my new niece!

I chose pink to make them super girly and used cotton yarn to make them nice and sturdy (and washable!). I used some beads that were left from some item of clothing I don’t think I own any longer (they came in a little plastic envelope as spares, like you often get spare buttons in case one falls off).

Once I’d finished the first foot the second was easy! Unfortunately, this made the second foot stitches tighter and smaller than the first, so I ended up undoing half of the first and redoing so that they matched!

Here are my finished booties, ready to send in the post:

March Crochet-Along

Habitual Homebody

This month’s crochet along was a knotted headband, using the free pattern from All About Ami.

It was a nice quick my pattern, and I made mine using 8-ply (because I own no 10-ply at all) cotton (as I thought it would give it more shape) and a 5.5mm hook (tbh because that was the first hook I found, but I figured using a size bigger than the pattern would kind of even out the sizing since my yarn was thinner!). I picked black as I thought it would go with anything.

Here is my finished hairband 🙂

Mandala CAL – finished!

overlay

It’s the last week of the CAL and I finished mine just in time!

It think it looks pretty good 🙂

It is made with Panda 8-ply cotton and is pretty big, measuring 41cm in diameter!

This week the CAL finishes with a vote with prizes for the top 3. The link to go and vote is here. If you’d like to go and vote for me that would be great!

UPDATE: I came joint first place in the mandala voting – yay! Thank you to everyone who voted 🙂
